Starting in the far north, the beaches of the Jacksonville and Amelia Island area are rich in natural beauty and history as well.
Ten major beaches and State parks are found in and around Jacksonville. The city beaches at Jacksonville are the most populous, extending for sixty urban blocks. Amelia Island beaches are more uncluttered with natural beauty and trails for walking or bicycling. Big Talbot and Little Talbot Island are mostly secluded quieter beaches.
St Augustine area beaches are unspoiled and secluded. Historically they date back the exploration days of the Spanish conquistadores. Guana River State Park is 2400 acres of estuarine preserve with two public beaches. Anastasia Island with St Augustine’s Beach is only a few miles from St Augustine yet you can fish, hike, and stroll on the sand, as well as kayak or sail. Wide beaches and tidal marshes provide much of interest.
Flagler Beach and the Palm Coast Area consist of nineteen miles of beaches, historical ruins and subtropical forests between St Augustine and Daytona Beach. Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is worth a visit just to view the beautiful formal gardens. The nearby beach is perfect for exploring tidal pools.
